Government VEET/IPART Rebate

How the rebate works

It is a common misconception that subsidized or free LED upgrades are a result of a “pool of government money.” Instead, they rely on accredited companies who are enabled to generate “certificates.”

These have a market value, and are used by accredited installers, to offset the led upgrade costs.

The way this operates differs across states:

Victoria

Each Victorian energy efficiency certificate (VEECs), represents one tonne of greenhouse gas emissions reduction. Depending on the wattage reduction associated with replacing a conventional light with an led fitting, a certain amount of VEECs can be claimed.

Not just any LED light can be used to claim VEECs. All fittings installed must have passed an accreditation process.

NSW

A very similar process occurs in NSW. The major differences are the certificates are called “Energy Saving Certificates (ESC),” and are subject to different rules governed by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART).

The market values of both VEECs and ESCs fluctuate somewhat independently.
